On Thursday, Europa League round of 16 games was held at old Trafford, while it was at its end, a small group suddenly confronted on the east stand in stadium. Fans were the rival’s supports. When referee blows the whistle for the game end, fight was broke out between Manchester and Liverpool fans, quite unusual incident.
There were reports of chairs and missiles being thrown on the top tier of the East Stand just prior to the full-time whistle. Journalists and fans reported ‘scuffles’ and punches being thrown after United were beaten 3-1 on aggregate in the Europa League last 16 clash, having drawn 1-1 on the night.
Police later confirmed a ‘physical altercation’ between United and Liverpool fans had taken place in a ‘small section’ of the crowd.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “Just prior to the full time whistle of the Manchester United versus Liverpool match, police were made aware of a physical altercation between supporters from both sides in a small section of the crowd.
“Police and stewards broke up the altercation and enquiries are continuing with those involved.”
It’s not yet known if any arrests have been made.
